This fall I will be leading (2) two California Sea Otter photography tours near Monterey, California and you’re invited! From the comfort of a pontoon boat those in attendance will have the ability to photograph the natural behaviors of California Sea Otters and potentially other species including Harbor Seals, California Sea Lions, Cormorants, Pelicans, Grebes, Surf Scoters and many other shore birds. Each tou
Click to Enlarge Invariably when you visit a photography forum these days you’ll find active discussions centered around camera gear whether its Canon vs. Nikon or the merits of medium vs. 35mm formats. At the root of these and many other debates on photography forums is the underlying question… Do high-end cameras make you a better photographer? The answer might surprise you… Yes! Unequivocally hig
This past weekend my sister’s family was visiting and I got a chance to experience San Francisco with fresh eyes with my niece, age 5, and nephew, age 3. Having lived in San Francisco now for nearly 10 years opportunities to see and experience San Francisco in new ways is increasingly rare. As you can only imagine we had a great time. One thing of note this weekend was that I finally took a ride on a cable ca
On my birthday this past weekend I took a much needed break and stopped off at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The last time I was there was in 2004 just after I got my 1D Mark II. Curious about geo-tagging or the pros and cons of supporting your local camera store versus online stores? Then you’re in luck that is exactly what is discussed in the recent release of PhotoNetCast. For those of you unaware of PhotoNetCast it is a podcast I’m taking part in with Martin Gommel, Antonio Marques and Brian Auer. It’s worth a listen when you have a chance as are the past epidsodes. Sunday night I took a few moments to look at my copy of Eliot Porter’s "In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World". For those that are unfamiliar with Eliot Porter he was one of the first photographers focusing on nature and wildlife in color versus black and white. His work has proven to be quite influential inspiring several of today’s iconic wildlife and nature photographers including Art
California’s coastline is hard to beat as a photographic subject. I’ve seen just about every mile of the California coastline from San Diego to the Oregon border and to this day one of my favorite areas is the coastline along Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey. What makes this stretch of coast so photogenic is the combination of surf, coastal rocks and rich kelp beds. Sunset on the Rocks – Monterey, Calif
