Reading Origin’s blog I found the following quote to be quite pertinent to show another (if not opposite) perspective to my blog post “You Are Here (Part 1/5): The Ultimate Compliment“. Some people’s photography is an art. Not mine. Art is a dirty word in photography. All this fine art crap is killing it already. – Helmut Newton
“You Are Here” is a running (5) five part series discussing a variety of contemporary philosophic questions about photography. If you missed the first entry you’re in luck. See here: You Are Here (Part 1/5): The Ultimate Compliment Enjoy Part 2… Previously The Ultimate Compliment focused on what is art, but a more dynamic discussion is who do you think is an artist and who has influenced your
The telephoto effect, created aptly when using longer focal length lenses, creates an altered perspective where distances are compressed or shortened. The net effect makes objects, that may be quite some distance apart, look close together. The longer the focal length the more pronounced this effect. An example of this can be seen in my photograph “San Francisco” where the Golden Gate Bridge and city skyl
Ever wonder how to photograph wind? It’s a tough concept to effectively capture. While on my honeymoon in Kauai, Hawaii I saw an opportunity one late evening. The right combination of subjects presented themselves including partly cloudy skies, palm trees and a firm wind. I ended up opting to use the moon to backlight a palm tree blowing in the wind to give the scene a little more of a dramatic flare. [tags]Haw
Something I meant to share last Friday that ties in my previous posts on copyrights. The following case both exemplifies the impact of copyrighting and not copyrighting your photography. In late May, Memorial Day weekend in fact, I had the opportunity to attend the Art Wolfe Creative Session workshop held here in San Francisco. I had a great time, but before I jump into the review to keep things transparent… I talk with Art every once in a blue moon and have gone out to shoot with him from time to time. With that being said this review will be impartial and should be a good measure to gauge the
Last night just before bed at 2:30AM I saw an announcement from Thomas Hawk on Twitter that Zooomr had launched. When I checked though it was still experiencing problems. Fast forward to this morning Zooomr is up and running. Congratulations to Thomas and Kristopher who run the site. This has been one of the rougher site launches that I’ve seen. The initial Zooomr launch was attempted March 13th with occasional
This weekend I had the opportunity to watch “This Film Is Not Yet Rated” and I really enjoyed it. Although focused on movies and the film industry the topics of censorship, copyright and new technology are quite relevant to photographers. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend renting it. One of the first thoughts I had after watching the movie was my realization that I had a love-hate relationsh
For those of you that are unaware today is the first day that the Library of Congress is accepting applications to Beta test a new electronic submission system. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be selected to take part. It will definitely make my life easier and will speed the process by which I register my photographic work. It should also be noted that one of the benefits of electronic submissio
