This past week had a lot of news worthy events that photographers and other creatives should be paying close attention to particularly in regard to Fair Use and Getty Image’s recent pricing announcement. Fair Use First the Computer and Communications Industry Association, a lobby group for technology companies, released a controversial report claiming that Fair Use adds more revenue to the economy than Copyrigh
Back in July I revisited the Sutro Baths area in the outer Richmond district area of San Francisco (see Sutro Baths Sunset). This particular photo was one of the first taken once I stepped out of my car. It just goes to show you don’t have to go very far in San Francisco to find an amazing scenic view. I should note the highlight of the outing was returning to my car a few hours later to find only one car in th
The northwestern Hawaiian islands are said to be among the most beautiful in the world. I’ve only been as far as Kauai so far, but while there I was able to see quite a few species of seabirds that call this area home. One of the most impressive birds to see soaring along the coast is the Laysan Albatross otherwise known as the Moli. The majority of the time these birds spend their time out to sea, but from Nov
The past few months I’ve been making efforts to minimize my waste footprint by choosing products that utilize less packaging particularly those using various forms of plastic. If products I or my wife use contain plastic we’re now more aggressively checking to see if it can be recycled. My wife has begun a loose phone campaign to inform manufacturers and resellers of “organic” products, as we
Today marks the 1 year anniversary of the JMG-Galleries blog. There are many stats to reference that blow my mind such as the 182,000+ times this blog has been loaded and the 310,000+ hits made to this blog in 1 years time. What blows my mind even more is the large number of great people I’ve developed friendships with through this blog. For all that have found their way to my web site and blog I’d like t
After a couple weeks of stellar weather where it has been clear, sunny and very warm here in San Francisco its back to typical San Francisco summer weather… namely foggy. The fog has never bothered me mostly because I consider it natural air conditioning. The San Francisco bay area has a variety of micro-climates so when it’s foggy in San Francisco, it’s sunny and warm a short distance away. Sun is
SABLE-3, Southern Alberta Balloon Launch Experiment #3, is a very impressive experiment in which a specially prepared point and shoot camera was attached to a helium filled balloon. The results are amazing. The camera was set-up with a tracking device and configured to snap a photo every minute. In 2 1/2 hours the balloon reached maximum altitude of 22 1/2 miles, the edge of our atmosphere! The write up and photos ar
Every so often I enjoy visiting the ruins of Sutro Baths here in San Francisco. It’s a fascinating place with an even more interesting history. Unlike other areas of San Francisco I don’t see many photographs of this area and until now it’s been a bit of my secret haunting ground. Below is a photograph I took a couple years ago at sunset. When I first put this photo out for feedback I didn’t g
The greatest thing about photography to me is that it truly is an endless journey. To this day I still feel I have barely touched the surface of what potential lies ahead for me in this great medium. Like most photographers we often delve into what successes we have had. Not surprising this proud display of photographic success is what most of us see when we view each others web sites, online forum submissions or pri
