One of the more interesting locations to get an alternate perspective on Yosemite National Park’s iconic Half Dome is Olmsted point. While Half Dome is always amazing to see anytime of the day, sunsets from Olmstead point can be particularly magical. Back in 2007 when I took this photo forest fires had ravaged surrounding areas to Yosemite and were still burning. Air quality was awful, but the smoke combined wi
Photo Info: Canon 1Ds Mark III, 840mm (600mm + 1.4x TC), ISO 100, F/25, 1/40 sec On the evening of Thursday the 12th of December and the morning of Friday the 13th December of 2008 there was a perigee moon that I was eager to photograph. Unfortunately Friday the 13th came early, clouds obscured the moonrise in the San Francisco area Thursday evening. Friday I happened to be up early in order to drive out to photograp
This past weekend I finally got around to revisiting some work from a couple years back when I was in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The trip was fantastic and yielded an amazing amount of imagery. Whether you’re aware or not, the photograph in the header banner of this blog was taken in the Arctic Refuge and is part of the large set of photographs, several hundred, I reviewed and released this weekend. I’m happy to announce that JMG-Galleries.com has taken on a new look and feel and a new stock photography section has been added. In fact the stock photography section is itself a web site unto itself JMG-Stock-Photo-Video.com. Check it out and let me know what you think. I’m still putting the finishing touches on the site and will be adding several thousand more images to the existing 1200 or so photogra
Sadly the statement “Film is dead.” has been played out far too much over the past few years. While running errands in my neighborhood I noticed a long standing local photo processing business had closed its doors. The casual reader might quickly dismiss this, but I urge you not to. Why? We all read articles and inflammatory posts online about film being dead, but in this instance it really is. Yes, perha
“Mount Diablo rising above a fog filled San Francisco bay” was a little too long of a title, so I went with “Morning Brew”. Fitting as everyone settles into their Monday morning, but also because metaphorically this photo works great for a less than subtle plug. The past couple of months I’ve nearly dropped off the radar with my blogging as I’ve worked to complete a tedious project
In December during my last Sea Otter Photo Tour we witnessed some very rare Sea Otter behavior. We witnessed not just once, but twice a Sea Otter attacking a Western Grebe and then eating it. This is very unusual behavior as Sea Otters normally eat shellfish like crabs and clams. The boat captain that took us out had noted an attack he witnessed earlier in the morning and that he hadn’t seen anything like it in
It’s been a great year for photography, perhaps even better than last year, and as 2008 nears its end I thought it would be fun to select my favorite photos from the year. I had a tough time narrowing things down so here they are… Honorable Mentions: Honorable Mention #5: Pike Place Market One thing I love about taking travel photos is the constant challenge to find a new perspective. While I got odd stares from pass
