Traveling you often see things that require a double take. On my last trip through South Dakota, at the Crazy Horse Memorial to be exact, I witnessed this classic moment… A man walking his dog while he rode his ATV. As a dog owner I walk my dogs at least two times a day and if it were up to my wife I’d be out with my dogs 3-4 times a day… so seeing this was really foreign. I witnessed this last year
Some landscapes are so sweeping its an incredible challenge to portray them properly in a tightly constrained photo, no matter what the format or lens used. The South Dakota Badlands fall into that category. Standing at any one of numerous scenic lookouts one’s field of view is completely filled with this amazingly surreal landscape. One of the most attractive things about venturing out and exploring nature is witnessing its raw beauty. Nature’s raw beauty is often put on a pedestal by nature photographers. Nature unadulterated or minimally edited is the intention of many photographers and by all means a noble goal. Yet this documentary style of nature photography is a narrow view. White Sands National Monument never ceases to amaze me. Whether lit at sunrise, midday or at sunset its not hard to see the unique and beautiful qualities of the white gypsum sand. It’s been too long since my last visit to White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. White Sands is one of my favorite locations to explore and photograph. Next week I’m happy to finally return to this amazing location. If all goes to plan I’ll be concluding a personal project here and exploring other photogenic locations else where in the state. This past weekend my wife and spent some time in Mendocino, California for our “babymoon”. With 6 weeks to go this was our last trip together before “Baby G” joins us. We stayed in the same place we enjoyed our mini-honeymoon 4 1/2 years ago. It brought back great memories and we had a fun time rediscovering the beautiful landscapes of the lost coast. Epic landscape photography was not the goa
I wonder what percentage of the population would still agree with the following quote? And for the record the photo below was captured as seen. “Not everybody trusts paintings, but people believe photographs.” – Ansel Adams [tags]photography, landscape, stock photo[/tags]
With so much discussion around the iPad this week I thought it would be a nice change of pace to refocus on convergence in nature vs. technology. My infatuation with nature photography is deeply rooted in isolating the simple yet beautiful moments we so often have a tendency to look past. What caught my eye on this rocky and barren beach in Maui, Hawaii was the beautiful wet rounded lava rocks. Everything else around
