You might not think photographing a picnic table would be all that interesting, but at night White Sands National Monument looks like a moonscape. The gray and blue tones look very moon-like and in combination with the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired picnic shelters you feel like you’re awaiting a shuttle back to Earth. Fortunately for me there were no run ins with Marvin the Martian. [tags]photography, stock photo
This is one of my favorite skyline photographs of downtown San Francisco. The pre-dawn light in combination with the glow of the buildings across downtown made for a special capture. As it turns out over the years this has been a favorite of others who have visited my web site as well. First featured on my web site in 2004 as part of my San Francisco Labyrinths write-up it’s been viewed hundreds of thousands of
If you ever want to see the desert come alive just spend some time there at night. This is true in relation to wildlife activity and finding a new take on landscape subjects. We are diurnal by nature so it is very easy to look past what unique lighting can be found at night. The desert offers so many great subjects rich textures, wildlife, expansive landscapes, unique plant life, etc. and all of it looks completely

As I gaze out to such dramatic scenes I can’t help but think of artists before me who defined the west coast tradition of photography. With such huge footprints to follow in I always think to the following quote: …to photograph a rock, have it look like a rock, but be more than a r
There is no canvas more beautiful than that of the ocean at sunset or sunrise. To the untrained eye it may all seem to be the same, but upon closer examination no one view is ever the same. I consider myself lucky in that every evening, barring the presence of fog, I’m treated to a view of a new sunset. While the view from home is nice, it’s never as nice as the cliffside view from Lands End here in San F
It’s hard to believe but it has been 3 years since I was in Los Angeles for ASMP’s Strictly Business 2 event as an attendee absorbing as much as I could about professional photography best business practices. 3 years later I’m returning to LA for ASMP’s Strictly Business 3 event as a guest panelist on new business models. If you’re in the area this weekend and serious about learning more
Sometimes there is nothing better than rediscovering an old photo. I had this slide (yes slide) of Haleakala Crater in Haleakala National Park , Hawaii drum scanned back in 2004. At the time I took this photo with Fuji Provia 400 film as it had great response for night photography and seemed to be the right fit for my effort to photograph the crater under a full moon.
