Just in case there might be any confusion… I’m back from 9 days of intense travel across the Northwest. For those using Internet Explorer web browsers I’d also like to welcome you back. It would seem that for several weeks now IE users were getting bounced from my web site. I’ve fixed this by using a new blog theme. I’m hoping by now this has become apparent to everyone. If you experience problems with my blog do let me know. I’m hoping to optimize things over the coming week.
As to my recent travels…
I drove over 2000 miles from Minneapolis, Minnesota to San Francisco, California all while stopping at the following locations:
- Badlands National Park
- Mount Rushmore, South Dakota
- Crazy Horse Mountain, South Dakota
- Black Hills National Forest, South Dakota
- Deadwood, South Dakota
- Devils Tower, Wyoming
- Glacier National Park
- Yellowstone National Park
- Grand Teton National Park
- Among Other Locations
On at least two separate days I drove over 800 miles each. Yes you can imagine such driving binges is enough to drive a man insane. Why put oneself through such torture?
Simply to return to Glacier National Park. This was my primary destination on my trip and the location I stayed the longest… a whopping 3 days and 2 nights.
Glacier National Park is the most beautiful location I’ve traveled to in the United States and my infatuation with this National Park began in 1988. Way back then I had a dorm room panoramic poster of Saint Mary’s Lake and dreamed of visiting as soon as I could. Unfortunately I had to wait until 2002 to visit. By that time I had a film SLR and was quite serious about photography. To my horror when I returned from my trip I found that my camera had a light leak and many of my photos were ruined. I came away with several that were unaffected, but the vast majority were ruined. I swore I’d return the next year (2003), but circumstances did not permit and this year was the first opportunity I had to return. This time I was able to return with a lot more experience under my belt and two dSLRs to ensure no opportunities were lost. My only regret is that I was unable to spend more time there. With all that being said you can expect to see some Glacier National Park photos in the near future. I’m still on Cloud Nine after having visited and can’t wait to return there as soon as possible.

Welcome Back, Jim. New theme looks great. Near seamless transition. BTW – HBD, in case you missed my tweet offering congrats.
Look forward to seeing you Glacier NP pics.
Thanks Gary! There are still some kinks to work out with this theme, but all in all a few more bells and whistles should be added. I just hope I can avoid other browser issues in the future. Thanks for the BD wishes. I appreciate it 🙂 As to the Glacier NP photos… it’s going to take some self-discipline to not obsess on them. I can’t wait to work on them.
You did what ? 2000 miles !!! That’s a incredible Jim. WOW.
PS : I found your post on tips to get most out of twitter very useful. Thank you so much.
Hey, Jim, welcome back. And while the Glacier NP story interests me, I’m more curious as to why half of the locations you list are in South Dakota? That’s MY neck of the woods; I have a long family history there and have visited Sioux Falls many times and been to the other places you described.
As to the 800 mile/day drives, you probably know enough about my bizarre one- and two-day photo expedition stories to realize that… I understand. 🙂
Take care,
Dan
Thomas I’m happy to hear that the post was of use. I’m catching up on Twitter follower notifications since my trip. I look forward to hearing how the use of the service works out for you.
Dan the sites don’t necessarily correspond to the length of time spent in that area. That portion of South Dakota has a lot to see in a fairly compact area. I didn’t realize you were from that area. You learn something new every day. 🙂
Jim, have you ever seen this guy’s blog?
http://glacierparkphotographer.blogspot.com/
Alas, his posts are very infrequent. I have yet to get out to Glacier despite driving across Montana once and stopping in Missoula. People said I should get up there but I was extremely underfunded at the time and couldn’t do it. I hope the glaciers aren’t gone by the time I finally get there.
Thanks for pointing this blog out John. He’s got some great photos of Glacier. You should definitely find a way to make it to GNP. Its incredibly beautiful there.
Welcome back Jim! I look forward to seeing some amazing photos from your journey!
Wow. I’m impressed that you were able to squeeze in 3 days in Glacier and still get in all those other places. I’m interested to see more of the South Dakota photos as you already know. 🙂
