This time of year I really cherish the fog here in San Francisco and am always looking for interesting photo opportunities. One of my favorite subjects to photograph is the coastal fog as it envelops the trees. If I’m not photographing this phenomenon I’m often telling my wife how I love the look of the fog in the trees as we go on our walks together. This has become a running joke between us as I say it so often she does her best to imitate me saying it when the fog rolls in.
These days when I’m not subject to such ridicule by my loving wife I’m often experimenting with various compositions of this subject with my iPhone. Of particular enjoyment has been using the iPhone app Instagram. One of the appealing aspects of the app is a set of really great filters that can be applied to any image almost instantly. The trick with this app though is it locks you in with a square format. I tend to shoot with my iPhone to get a standard horizontal or vertical image and then import it into Instagram. It makes for a great exercise in looking for good subjects and imagining them in various composition formats. If you’re not yet on Instagram here are a few examples (after the jump) compared to the photo above taken with my Canon 5D Mark II.

I love this time of year as well. It is a shame that Vegas delivers practically no fog what so ever! I am still trying to figure a move to a more weather diverse location…
