For those reading my blog who use Canon gear I happened across a DPReview.com forum post listing Canon lenses that are considered weather and dust resistant when used on a 1D body. This information is good to know, but an even more valuable piece of information to be aware of is that the main seal that provides this protection is at the rear of the lens where it attaches to the camera body. What is not widely known, something I found out from a Canon representative a few years back, is that to completely make your lens resistant to dust and water you should put a filter on the front of your lens. Filters such as a UV filter and even a circular polarizer helps seal the front elements of your lens enhancing the lenses resistance to dust and water.
Not trusting a DPReview forumpost I decided to validate the list noted below. Here is what I’ve found so far…

Hi, the EF 85mm f1,2 L II is NOT weather sealed. It lacks the rear seal, and therefor I assume it’s not. To me it’s ridicolous that all of them (L’s) aren’t weather sealed properly, I mean, I use my 85 often in the rain due to it’s f1,2 for poor light and shallow dof. It has never failed, but to get water inside my mkIII would be somewhat depressing. And why aren’t they? it’s not like any of the L’s are cheap, and the 17-40 is cheap compared to my 85 or even my 300mm f4 L and the lather aren’t sealed, but the 17-40 is?!
@Canonite I’ll have to check out the 85mm II to find out.
hm….Canon says that 14. 24 and 100mm ARE DUST AND WATER RESISTANT
