If there is one thing I’ve learned as a photographer it is always check your seconds. Upon first review of a days shoot I’ll almost always pick out the great shots. There’s a caveat to this though… these great shots are usually in line with a preconceived notion of what I wanted to get from the shoot. Coming back to these same photos later allows me to review my work with a fresh perspective. The end result is usually the discover of a real gem of a photo. Case in point with “Out of the Gloom II: Golden Gate Bridge and Fog” (seen below). Photographed the same day as Out of the Gloom: Golden Gate Bridge and Fog I some how passed this image by looking for a different type of shot.

Wow. I think I might like this one even better than No.1. It’s soooooo close! More sky or more fog…I think more fog!
Wonderful shots Jim!
Taking a second look reminds me of a Wessel quote:
“If you let some time go by before considering work that you have done, you move toward a more objective position in judging it. The pleasure of the subjective, physical experience in the world is a more distant memory and less influential.”
Jim,
So true! I always come back to my photographs with a different frame of mind from when i shot them…
Great tip.
@heyjules thanks 🙂
@latoga great quote. I’ll be sure to reference that one in the future.
@Susheel Coming back to reevaluate photos definitely makes a world of difference. It’s actually quite amusing to see some shots that were seconds… often they’re better than the firsts. Amazing how photographers can sometimes filter out their best work.
Great shot Jim. I have surprised myself by going over RAW folders months later and noticing something special that I hadn’t the first time around. It’s like finding a $20 bill in the pocket of a coatyou haven’t worn in a long time.
@noeltykay Funny… in some regard it is like finding long lost money in your pocket. These are the types of surprises that I enjoy as a photographer unlike some other types of surprises.
