White Sands Yardang

Yardang - a rock ridge feature caused by wind and water erosion. I stumbled upon this venturing out in the middle of White Sands New Mexico with my camera in one hand and a GPS in another. This area is a truly amazing place. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Midnight Reflections

Taken just after midnight as I was about to go to bed. Pictured here is the Kongakut River Valley. This portion of the river was covered in Auf eis (remnant ice from winter). We camped just off the river near this small pool of melted Auf eis. As the fog rolled in and the light became less intense the scene came alive. I wouldn't recommend capturing an image like I did for this photo. I extended my camera on my tripod and stuck it out 4 feet over the water with the lens an inch off the water. I was lucky to be able to support the camera and tripod while balancing myself on the edge of the river bank. One miss step and my gear would have been done for. JMG-Galleries.com ©2007 Jim M. The calm before the storm. The wave in the distance caught up with me in a big way dousing me from head to toe.
