It’s not often I get behind a commercial venture, but if I do its because I really have found it to be of value. Such is the case with the Epson Print Academy. Back in 2006 I attended the San Francisco event and walked away with notes I reference to this day.
It’s for this reason and with great enthusiasm I’m announcing a JMG-Galleries blog exclusive:
I’m giving away a total of 6 tickets …
2 tickets to each of the following Epson Print Academy events:
1/31/09 – Seattle, WA.
2/7/09 – San Francisco, CA
2/21/09 – Los Angeles, CA
The Epson Print Academy has two tracks and if you win you can choose either track to attend.
Track 1:
Instructor – Jack Reznicki
Learn how the pros create award winning prints with the latest generation digital SLRs, software and printers.
Track 2:
Instructors – JP Caponigro, Greg Gorman, R. Mac Holbert, Andrew Rodney and Jeff Schewe

What would you like to learn about to create prints or improve your print making?Important:

What If I Don’t Win?
Even if you don’t win the giveaway I highly recommend attending. There is a discounted price to attend if you register at least 3 days before the seminar. Track 1 costs $49.95 (normally $79.95) and Track 2 costs $99.95 (normally $149.95). The knowledge you’ll walk away with is well worth the cost to attend.

As far as learning about printing i would like to learn more on how to match the colors on your screen with the print profile of the printer and how it all ties together, i find that it always comes out to dark. It would be great if i could attend the Seattle version on 1/31.

I would like to learn Techniques For Building and Applying Color Profiles.
Please include me in the drawing for Seattle, Wa on 1/31. Thanks! ~ 🙂
I feel like my photography is where it needs to be, but I don’t have much print knowledge. This would help out tremendously! I think the LA one would work best for me simply because of timing.
I’d like to learn which types of images look better on certain paper vs. others. I’d also like to improve my workflow. I live near Seattle.
I have read many books and watched numerous videos regarding printing. Sources such as Digital Outback Photo’s Fine art printing, Luminous Landscape Printing Videos and others. There is so much information out there that it is hard to put it all together. This seminar would allow me to put it all together with feed back from others.
I could attend San Francisco.
I live near San Francisco. I have an Epson 3800. I certainly need a review of color space management as I’m never quite satisfied or confident of my settings. I’ve think that most of my images are best seen as prints (old school). I’ve done some home printing and my favorites are those that are much finer and go beyond the view realized on screen. I’d love to learn how to dependably get the results I now only accidently/occasionally achieve. I would definitely benefit, as “trial and error” is currently my only instructor. I would be a “blank slate”, ready to consume the offerings in full.
Didn’t know it was in Seattle…yah! I’ll look into it and if I’m back from my travels in time, I would love to go. So much to learn….Today I took some images into our local photoshop for extra help in the printing and last night sent another photographer some images to send in and print on metallic papers just to see the difference…can’t wait to see the results.
I’m finding I’m intrigued with the finer details that a good paper can accomadate but gets lost often through my home printer or even Costco…refinement in an image.
I have been shooting digital for about four years, and think i have a pretty god workflow down, until it comes to producing good quality prints from my Epson 2400. I’ve tried books on color management with little success as I’m the type who learns better from actually doing something instead of reading about it. Attending this seminar may be just the ticket I need to fine tune my printing workflow. I have several prints that I would love to hang on a wall, but just can’t seem to get them right. I’d be honored to to selected to attend the Los Angeles Print Academy.
Pingback: G Dan Mitchell Photography » Printing is on my Mind
Hi Jim:
First, the link back to your site from a piece I just published on my blog about printing at http://www.gdanmitchell.com/2009/01/08/printing-is-on-my-mind.
“What would you like to learn about to create prints or improve your print making?”
As you probably know, I’ve been doing a _lot_ of printing recently, and I have a few immediate objectives in this area. One is to make some decisions about the next printer, and I’m certain that a lot of the information from the print academy will be relevant to that. In addition, when I get the opportunity to work with other photographers who are experience printers I always learn new and critical techniques.
If I’m lucky enough to end up with a ticket to the event my first choice would certainly be San Francisco.
Dan
… but Seattle _might_ be possible… 🙂
Aw, heck, Jim, there’s so much I need to learn about printing that I don’t even know what questions to ask!
I’d like to learn about different papers, I know zip-zilch-zero about color spaces; I need to actually *SEE* prints to learn the differences, and to understand the whole process, I need to WATCH the process as it happens. I’d like to know why details are blurred on Fuji Perl paper when the image is pin sharp on my monitor.
I learn best in an immersion situation; Throw me in there, Jim, I’ll learn to swim in ink yet.
BTW, should your kindness stretch that far, I’d have to go to SF for the training.
I’d like to learn about how to sharpen an image for printing and I’d also like to learn about color management for printing. If I win, I would like to attend the training in Seattle.
Thanks!
I would love to get tickets to the LA event, its always nice to hear different techniques and perspectives on color management. Looks like they have a solid panel as well.
If anyone has any current needs or would like advice on color management i’d be glad to help, shoot me an email: matt@thecolorspace.com
Good timing on this Jim! I have had the brochure for this event sitting on my desk for the past 2 weeks. One thing I would love to hear (as would a number of your other readers I imagine) from you is which track you attended a few years ago and why.
For me personally, I’ve hit the point of realization that I need to print more of my photos but also want to have the fine art control over the printing process (this really hit me when I recently printed my favorite photo from Italy, a 4′ tall pano).
My goals with regards to printing and this course is to learn more about printers details (though this will be a bit one sided at this event), get some tips from others about ink/paper combination, color management, as well as in the real world experience of using the printer. My biggest fear is that I would make an investment in a wonderful printer and then go too long between print runs and end up spending lots of money on ink that goes bad in the printer…
(oh yeah, San Francisco event of course…)

Hi I would like to attend Seattle on 1/31.I will drive down from Vancouver BC for the day. Im looking forward to getting started with the basics in printing and moving up to where I can start hanging some big prints on my walls. Thanks
“What would you like to learn about to create prints or improve your print making?”
Well, I have nothing to do BUT improve. I cannot get any worse. I understand the concept of printer/monitor calibration, but cannot transfer that understanding into the inner workings of my computer. I found a great deal on a large format Epson printer a few years ago, but have yet to print anything worthy of staying out of the trash.
I would really appreciate the opportunity to attend the Seattle seminar.
Thank you.
I sure would like to attend the Seattle workshop. I am a complete moron when it comes to the final print and could use a few thousand pointers on quality printing. So sign me!
Thanks
Bill
While I’ve concentrated on composition, lighting, exposure, color, sharpening…. etc., when it comes to printing, I just go “HUH?”, and hope that the photo shop will do me right (not!). I’d like to gain better control, and maybe, just maybe, start printing at home.
I’d be able to attend the LA workshop.
Lisa
I teach digital photography to over 250 high school students each year. They print their photos on an Epson 2200, 2400 and 7800. I am very interested in learning as much as possible about printing quality, printer maintenance and improving work-flow. This is a great opportunity to learn from professionals in the business who have experience and knowledge in the latest technologies. “I need to always be 1-step ahead of my students” Thanks, Joe, Los Angeles Workshop
I need a workshop like this to get me off my butt to start using the Photoshop I was given last year for Christmas.
Please send me to San Francisco because I want to know how to climb a pole at Pikes Peak Market and get a great shot.
I would like to learn about ICC profiles and how they effect the print, making prints match what is on the monitor as close as possible. I have a Epson R2400 and used it only a few times.
Thanks.
Even though I’ve calibrated my monitor I still long to see in print what I see on my screen. Right now it’s close, but no cigar. San Francisco is best for me, but L.A. is doable too.
I would like to learn more about soft proofing and the interaction of the monitor, the printer, and the paper.
San Francisco is best for me
What would I like to learn?? EVERYTHING. Right now, I send everything out for printing. Years ago, I did take 2 photog classes w/a darkroom component..and it’s time to translate that learning into the digital world! THANKS for the opportunity — and I’d be interested in the San Francisco one.
Matching the colors and light intensity between the screen and the printer is where I need most help. I currently waste a lot of paper because of this.
I am using an Epson Stylus Pro 3800 that produces fabulous results. I would be in heaven if I could speed up the printing process and save paper and ink. I want to get greener.
I would appreciate being enter into the SF giveaway. Thanks.
